Hop in the Pool after a day at the beach, a deck shower allows you to wash off the sand before you take a refreshing dip! You may have to share with a few ducks!
Hang out at the Crab Dock for Sunset Views: Our dock extends gracefully into Oak Creek, offering a picturesque spot for crabbing, fishing, or simply enjoying breathtaking sunsets.
Stay Active with a friendly competition of bocce ball, tennis or pickleball on our well-maintained courts (equipment in deck boxes). Or just a nice walk around the neighborhood!

Nearby Necessities For a quick grocery stop head to Bert's on island at the corner of East Ashley and 2nd Street (they have everything you might need in very small sizes). For a more serious grocery run or pharmacy needs, Harris Teeter is 2.5 miles up the road at 1985 Folly Road. They have a great selection of produce, cheese, and deli items. Their subs are great to grab for a beach or boat day! If you are staying awhile longer and need some household goods, Walmart is 4 miles further away at 1231 Folly Road. If you want the catch of the day, stop by Crosby's Fish & Shrimp Co. at 2223 Folly Road. Their food truck is phenomenal and popular (which means crowded) with seasonal hours that are usually June/July Thurs, Fri, Sat noon - 4:00 pm. There are tables and shade on the dock!

Running & Walking Folly Beach is a runner's and walker's paradise! From your doorstep to the end of the Folly Beach Pier and back is a perfect 5k! For a longer route, turn left at the pier and keep running east on Artic turning around at 9th Streeet to head back. The expansive, hard-packed sand at low tide offers miles of scenic beachfront for a challenging run or a leisurely stroll.
Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) The beach is the star of the show, but we encourage you to discover Folly's serene marshlands and waterways. Rent a kayak or SUP from Flipper Finders and explore the calm creeks and intercoastal waters, keeping an eye out for playful dolphins and diverse birdlife.
Surfing Folly Beach proudly lives up to its nickname, "The Edge of America," with waves suitable for all skill levels. "The Washout," on the east end, offers consistent breaks for experienced surfers, while other areas are more beginner-friendly. We have enjoyed Isla Surf School for lessons.
Biking With its flat terrain, Folly is ideal for cycling. Rent bikes and cruise through town, explore residential streets, or even ride along the hard-packed sand during low tide for a delightful experience.

On Island: Attractions
The Porgy House Step into a piece of American cultural history at the Porgy House, 712 West Ashley. This historic cottage was the summer retreat of author DuBose Heyward and where George Gershwin stayed while collaborating on the iconic opera Porgy and Bess. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Folly's past and its artistic legacy.
Morris Island Lighthouse A majestic and iconic Folly Beach landmark. While you can't visit the lighthouse directly (it sits offshore), a walk to the Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve on the island's east end provides breathtaking views and fantastic photo opportunities, especially at sunrise or sunset.
The Folly Beach Wishing Tree A whimsical and heartwarming stop past the county park on the far west end of the island. This charming tree is adorned with countless wishes, notes, and mementos left by visitors – a truly unique and inspiring sight.
Folly Beach Turtle Nest Discovery (Seasonal) For a truly magical once in a lifetime experience, follow Folly Beach Turtle Watch facebook.com/follyturtles during hatchling season (May-Oct). The Folly Beach Pier The Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier stretches over 1,000 feet into the Atlantic. It's a prime spot for fishing, leisurely strolls, enjoying panoramic ocean views, and watching the local surfers ride the waves.
Off Island: Explore Beyond Folly
Deep Water Vineyard (Johns Island) Just a short, scenic drive from Folly, Deep Water Vineyard is Charleston's only vineyard and winery. Enjoy wine tastings, explore the beautiful grounds, and check their schedule for lively weekend events often featuring food trucks and live music.
Angel Oak Tree (Johns Island) A truly awe-inspiring natural wonder. This magnificent live oak tree, estimated to be 400-500 years old, boasts immense limbs that sprawl across the ground, creating an incredible canopy. It's a powerful and humbling experience.
Historic Charleston (20-minute drive depending on time of day and traffic): There is so much to see in Charleston! We recommend just wearing your most comfortable shoes and getting lost! Walking the cobblestone streets and reading all the historic markers is a wonderful afternoon activity! Our favorite things to do are a Ghost Tour (they are all fun! We like the one run by Buxton Books) World-Class Dining (Charleston's culinary scene is renowned) King Street (discover a vibrant mix of high-end boutiques, local shops, and art galleries) The Battery & Waterfront Park (stroll along the scenic waterfront, enjoy iconic views, and relax by the pineapple fountain).
Beach Life:
Embracing the Ocean's Rhythm
Folly Beach is more than just a destination; it's a state of mind. We hope you will embrace the laid-back, ocean-centric rhythm of beach life from finding your perfect sandy spot to understanding the tides.
Your Preferred Beach Access You're perfectly positioned to enjoy the less crowded stretches of Folly Beach. A quick 10-minute drive will take you to quieter access points, allowing you to spread out and enjoy the ocean without the bustling crowds of the central pier area. For those seeking amenities and lifeguards (during peak season), head west to the Folly Beach County Park. If catching waves is your goal, the renowned "Washout" on the east end is a surfer's paradise. There are beach access points every half block for paid parking, or you can park on the street (be sure to park with the flow of traffic, wheels completely off the pavement, and fold in the driver side view mirror so you don’t have any surprises when you return from the beach!) Our favorite beach access lots? 6th or 8th Street West (they have showers!).
River Access Closer to Little Oak, the Folly River offers calm, serene waters ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The public boat dock right over the bridge is perfect for launching small watercraft or simply enjoying the tranquil river views and marsh wildlife.
Tides & Their Importance Understanding the tides is key to maximizing your beach day! Low tide offers expansive stretches of hard-packed sand, perfect for long walks, running, biking, and shell collecting. High tide brings the water closer to the dunes. We recommend checking a local tide chart app or website (like NOAA Tides & Currents for Folly Beach) before you head out to plan your activities. Please be aware that Folly occasionally experiences Rip Tides which are powerful, fast-moving currents of water along the coast. Never swim alone and if in doubt, don't go out! Our favorite time to boogie board is high-tide-coming-in for the best waves!
Folly Beach Weather Folly Beach boasts beautiful weather year-round, with warm and inviting summers. While afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, they often pass quickly, leaving behind refreshing air and spectacular sunsets. Always check the forecast before you head out, and remember your sunscreen, hats, and hydration!
Capturing Memories Folly Beach is incredibly photogenic! From vibrant sunrises over the Atlantic to spectacular sunsets over the marsh, the abundant wildlife, and the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse, you'll find endless opportunities for stunning pictures. Don't forget to capture your "Folly State of Mind" – relaxed, happy, and carefree. And keep in mind a cloudy day is a great opportunity for fabulous beach selfies without the sun’s glare!
The Folly State of Mind Folly Beach encourages you to relax, unwind, and embrace the laid-back pace. Leave your worries behind, feel the sand between your toes, and let the ocean waves wash away your stress. It's about reconnecting with nature, with loved ones, and with yourself.
